Winter 2011 by Marie Charron
This year’s winter season is quickly drawing to a close. It began with the arrival of our Snowbirds in early January. A few actually came in December and spent Christmas at WPI. Once again, the lobby was beautifully decorated and welcoming for all who arrived early.
The season quickly got under way with Pot Luck Supper every other Thursday, Happy Hour every Friday and special events throughout the winter. The Valentine’s Day Dinner was a big success with an added twist this year. All the Snowbirds were asked to bring their wedding albums or pictures of their special day. We set up a table dressed up in white lace and fit for a wedding. Here we displayed all the albums for everyone to see. Some of them went back into the 1950’s. It was like looking at a collection of love stories over the decades. Both owners and guests participated, and we all had such a good time sharing our stories.
We had a Pizza Party in late February that coincided with our first quarter board meeting. This allowed several board members to finally meet our winter residents. It was an opportunity to also meet some of our new owners, Wayne Parks (802) and Dean and Debbie Cook (803). Everyone had a really nice time.
In March, we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with a dinner that was highlighted by platters of traditional corned beef and cabbage and lots of shamrocks and leprechauns. It brought out the Irish in all of us, even those of us who don’t have any.
The last event has been traditionally called the Farewell Gathering. It will take place on March 24. It is an opportunity for all those leftover staples like sugar and flour and condiments to find their way into baked good and casseroles before everyone has to pack up for their return trips home. It should be a delicious and eclectic assortment of goodies.
The winter season officially ends on March 31, but most guests will be leaving the weekend before traveling close to 1,000 miles for many of them. We wish them all a safe trip home and like their namesakes, look forward to their return next winter
